What are dermal fillers?

Dermal fillers help reduce your facial lines and restore fullness to your facial features.

As you age, your face naturally loses fat beneath your skin’s surface, making your smile lines and crow's feet more visible. Sun exposure, heredity and lifestyle choices can affect the volume or fullness of your face as well.

Dermal fillers are non-surgical, temporary rejuvenation treatments for facial aging that require ongoing reapplication for long-term results. Dr. Mailyan uses dermal fillers to help:

  • Enhance shallow contours
  • Soften facial creases and wrinkles
  • Improve the appearance of recessed scars
  • Reconstruct contour deformities in your face
  • Decrease or remove the shadow of your lower lids

What to expect with a dermal filler procedure?

Dr. Mailyan first evaluates your facial appearance – your skin tone and the areas of your face you wish her to augment. She may mark strategic points on your face as appropriate injection sites, as well as take photographs of the facial area she’s targeting.

Using an antibacterial agent, she cleanses your injection sites and applies local anesthesia. The injections usually take only a few moments per site, and the whole process may be as short as 15 minutes, or as long as an hour, depending on the number of areas she treats.

Dr. Mailyan and her staff offer an ice pack to reduce swelling and alleviate discomfort. Although the area may feel a bit tender for a day or two, it is usually not painful enough to require any medication.

What are the different types of dermal fillers?

Different types of dermal fillers offer longevity of one to four months, and up to over a year, as well as various levels of softness, depending on the active ingredient found in their chemical makeup. The most common types of fillers are calcium hydroxylapatite and hyaluronic acid, which are both substances found naturally in your body.

Calcium hydroxylapatite

Dr. Mailyan often uses calcium hydroxylapatite – known as Radiesse® – to help with:

  • Moderate-to-severe creases
  • Enhance fullness of the cheeks and other facial contours

Hyaluronic acid

Dr. Mailyan uses hyaluronic acid injections to improve your skin's contour and reduce depressions in your skin due to scars, injury or lines. Common brand names are Juvederm®, Perlane®, and Restylane®, which help dramatically improve the appearance of:

  • Acne scars
  • Cheek depressions
  • Crow's feet at the corner of your eyes
  • Deep smile lines that run from the side of your nose to corners of your mouth
  • Frown lines between your eyebrows
  • Marionette lines at the corners of your mouth
  • Scars including burns, acne and those caused by wounds
  • Worry lines that run across your forehead

Dr. Mailyan will determine the best type and volume of filler needed for your specific case. If you’re looking for a minimally invasive option to reduce unwanted facial lines, call Dr. Mailyan or schedule an appointment online.
